Tired of having too much laundry and not enough clean towels. I’ve discovered is a simple system to organise the family towels that will enable everyone to have one whenever they need one.
I have visitors in my home all the time. Either family or friends that come to stay, we have international students sometimes, the kids often have friends over at the weekend. That’s not including our own family use, the kid’s bathroom and ours. Towels are always needed and there is always confusion.

WE NEED TO ORGANISE THE FAMILY TOWELS BECAUSE
- We have ‘special’ towels we really like that we don’t want others to use
- Towels left on the bathroom floor and you don’t know whose it is
- Having your own personal towel that is yours and yours only!
- Keeping track of which linen goes in which bathroom
- Having enough for everyone but not too much linen to wash
THE SIMPLE ANSWER IS NOT NEW
Colour coding! Yep, its a thing, and definitely not as tacky as you would think. I came up with a colour system for organising the family towels so everyone knows whose towel is whose and where it goes. When things get folded and put away, we all know whose they are and where they go.
CHOOSE A GENERAL COLOUR FOR EACH PERSON
My daughter gets Pink towels, my son gets Blue. If you had 2 daughters you could use the same or 2 son’s use Green and Blue instead. My husband and I also have our own colours, I have white and he has light brown. For visitors, we were given a gift once of bright red towels and because they were a funny colour we decided to use them for visitors, and so it stayed that colour, mostly, it’s now a burnt orange colour.
This is how I have managed our towels. The kids have got their own bathroom so we know that the blue, pink and red towels go in there, I also use orange bath mats and hand towels. My husband and I use white and light brown towels are for us, our bath mats and hand towels are the same.
EVEN WORKS FOR TOWEL-STEALERS IN THE HOUSEHOLD
My husband doesn’t touch my towels and I don’t touch my daughters, and it really works. Everyone can understand the system and likes having their own towels. It works for more detailed people and for the more laid back ones that grab whatever towel. Generally, the laid-back more relaxed users will 99.9% of the time use their own towel. It’s fantastic!
Best of all, when you find one lying around you know who to ask to pick it up 🙂
ONLY 2 EACH – MAX
We don’t need 100 towels, we just need enough right, so we only ever have 2 each. This is to stop people from just grabbing another towel whenever. They have a spare in case one is in the wash but they should always have a towel they can use.
A FEW OTHER NOTES ABOUT TOWELS
I have 2 other criteria for towels, the old and ripped towels belong to the dog and they go in the laundry. We only keep 2-3 of those. The other type of towel is beach towels for the pools or swimming anywhere outside the house. These are kept in the hall linen cupboard and nobody uses there bathroom towels for the beach or pool.
